iPhone vs. Android: Which Is Better for You?
Everyone knows the iPhone at this point, its brand awareness now surpassing even the company name of Apple according to some studies, so it makes sense to play up that angle on the Touch which is more a casual device to begin with. The biggest advantage for Apple with an iPhone or iPod Touch demographic wise is the more mature market age-wise. There are plenty of adults who love gaming who won't mind having some decent games on their phone or music player but would never consider a separate portable game console, or at least carry one around with them.
I consider myself a gamer and own a , an old gamegube and ancient gameboy. I even participate in clans for some games but I have little desire to carry around a single purpose gaming device along with my phone, not to mention carting extra carts and game discs around to boot. As young gamers grow up a significant number will game less but a significant number, myself included, would otherwise forgo portable gaming if it wasn't available on a device which I have to carry like a phone.
Apple is lowering the threshold for these kinds of users by giving them gaming in a nice neat package with easy accessibility and the ability to carry a huge number of games around as easily as carry no games. Edit- I would just like to add that there likely will always be a market for discreet portable gaming devices just like there will likely be music only portable devices but the same way the iPhone was borne out of a stark realization by Apple the mobile phone market was going to erode the iPod market out from under them the iPhone and future iterations can potentially erode the gaming market out from under Sony and Nintendo.
You want to be the maker of the one device people carry as a priority. Personal anecdote: I want as few gizmos in my life as possible That's a factor that Nintendo and Sony are going to have to contend with and tackle over the next few years. In some long flights, it might have been nice to play games but the casual games offered by in-flight entertainment IFE systems have been enough. I have no idea how good these games will end up being - particularly Konami's - but I think it's interesting that EA and Konami are bringing these long-established franchises to Apple's platform. I've been amazed that Apple uses every chance it gets to tell people the iPhone is a gaming platform and is better than the DS. You think they would let Nintendo be lazy and ignore them but they seem to be itching for a fight.
